To Make Disciples of Jesus Christ
E-MissionsOUTREACH AND MISSIONS
“You have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much
more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire.” – 1 Peter 1:7
Beginning in September 2010, Westley Community Center and the Monroe Township Food Bank are teaming together in asking for your assistance with specific items, which are needed by each organization. This doesn't mean that you must limit your donations only to these suggestions! The items listed below are those which each center always needs. Please feel free to donate whatever you are able -- it will be greatly appreciated. There are boxes in the connector (stairway between sanctuary and fellowship hall) where you can place your items. Together we can be the hands and feet of Jesus to so many people.
Suggested items for each month:
September 2010 - paper towels and toilet paper
October 2010 - laundry soap and dish detergent
November 2010 - canned fruits, applesauce, juices, and KoolAid
December 2010 - canned vegetables
January 2011 - canned and boxed soups
February 2011 - spaghetti and spaghetti sauce, canned pastas, packages of noodles

“Praise the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, you are very great;
you are clothed with splendor and majesty.” – Psalm 104:1
During the Advent season, many donated items adorn the S.U.M.-thing tree in the sanctuary. Items include Speedway gift cards, pairs of gloves and mittens, knit caps, scarves, socks, underwear, and infantwear. After Christmas, the items are given to Wesley Community Center and the Preble County Domestic Violence Shelter.
“The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.” – Isaiah 58:11
Early in the spring we collect vegetable seed packets for Jackson Area Ministries in rural Appalachia Ohio. This ministry helps local growers provide food for their families and additional income.
“I will not leave you comfortless; I will come to you.” – John 14:18
Earthquakes in countries already devasted by economic conditions are a tragedy that is difficult to comprehend. Volunteers from the United Methodist Committee On Relief and many other organizations and individuals travel all over the world to assist where needed. Stories of survival and perseverance are in the news every day. But what we hear more about is the great need for food, shelter, and supplies. A basic CWS Health Kit provides items that restore dignity to people who have lost everything. One health kit contains: 1 hand towel, 1 washcloth, 1 comb, 1 nail file or nail clipper, 1 bath-sized bar of soap, 1 toothbrush, one 4-7 oz. tube of toothpaste, and 6 band-aids. All items should be sealed in a one-gallon plastic bag with zipper closure. CWS Health Kits, School Kits, Layettes, and Clean-up Kits are usually gathered in the fall for the WOC Festival of Sharing, held in Westerville, Ohio.

The Festival of Sharing is held annually in October at the Otterbein College Campus Center, Westerville, Ohio. Its purpose is to recognize the various mission projects that combat hunger and homelessness. Originally, this event was held in Springfield and each district was represented by having a craft booth, selling meals and/or baked goods, or an educational display. Then, after a few years of changes, the Festival evolved into what it is today: a day of celebration which includes collection of Church World Service kits, a worship service, mission displays, a cooking demonstration using Food Pantry items, involvement in building a Habitat For Humanity utility shed, and a scavenger hunt. A semi trailer is on-site and volunteers on hand to accept donations of CWS kits. The Festival opens at 8:30 a.m. and closes at noon.
